Bugaboos

This perfect hike was preceded by a lenthy drive on a less-than-perfect road, especially the last 3 km! At the parking lot, we got to wrap our van with chicken wire to deter the porcupines. The day was warm and cloudless with almost no wind. Most of the 5 km to the Conrad Kain hut had spectacular views of the glaciers and spires up ahead. The hut itself was perched on the edge of the mountainside, near a waterfall. A small water-powered generator provided electricity for the hut. Three 'interesting' outhouses called out to be photographed, with and without attendees. After lunch, we investigated the landscape to the south of the hut, aiming for the glacier's edge. Ray and I scrambled up the lateral moraine to the foot of Snowpatch Spire, then over big boulders and snow patches and back down to the hut. Bill travelled on the the edge of the glacier. Once back together at the hut, we returned the way we had come up, via ladder and chains, through glorious flowery ledges and cool forests. Anoter Mario-cart driving session around the potholes, and we were on our way back to Radium for a late, welcome supper provided by Deirdre and Bill. Ahhhhhh.....what a day!
